Asking Questions That Breach Human Rights Acts include;
- Do you plan on having any more children?
- Where are you from?
- Are you married or single?
Be careful what questions you ask and how you phrase them; you’re not allowed to screen a tenant based on:
- Ancestry, including people of Aboriginal descent
- Place of origin
- Living with their parents
- Receipt of public assistance
- Citizenship, including refugee status
- Sex (including pregnancy)
- Gender identity
- Family status
- Race, colour or ethnic background
- Religious beliefs or practices
- Marital status, including people with a same-sex partner
- Disability
- Sexual orientation
- Age, including people who are 16 or 17 years old
Insisting on getting the tenant’s social insurance number (SIN) is also not allowed. According to Equifax, a SIN number isn’t required to run a credit check and can be done with just the full name, date of birth, and address of the person.
Remember, you must decide and remember to contact the applicant and provide them with your decision, no matter what it is!
